Im the type of person that is typically home by 8 pm, unless the excursion involves hiking boots or passports. My couples tend to be the same, so in a way it's like hanging out with an old friend - just you're wearing nicer clothes.
Photography has long been the side kick to my adventures, and I love documenting moments in life. But beyond the beautiful photos, what you get when we work together is the constant optional brewery pit stop, LOTR references, meeting your pups on zoom and making your wedding day feel like your greatest adventure.

My story has taken me all over the globe, and I’ve been fortunate to see so many beautiful places and try lots of delicious and sometimes terrifying foods. As a highly experienced international traveler, I’ve encountered it all. Over the years, I’ve learned how to navigate just about any situation that might come up (margarita's help) and want to be your guide in this process.
Like most things in life, I believe that a sense of humor, a touch of patience and a generosity towards humans everywhere goes a long way. This goes for how I approach my work as well - so while the introversion is there, I empathize with this mentality that life is one big adventure.

Matlai /mat-lie/

: the name of the easterly winds that come off the Indian Ocean in Kenya.

The name of my business is special to me because it’s a nod to my birthplace, Kenya. The easterly winds bring much-needed rains to the region of east Africa, and I was born on such a morning in December. This name is symbolic to my life, not only as a tribute to hometown and my life of international travel, but it reflects the deep desire to observe the natural world around us, and cultivate the intention of adventure and mindfulness.
Wanna know a secret though? When I was a kid, I did not love this name. Its my middle name and I always thought it was weird. Funny how maturity and perspective does things to you.

For far too long, I spent my life doing what I thought I should do. With a job in economics and diploma in hand, I suddenly realized that I felt … nothing. After a trip overseas with Photographers Without Borders, I saw firsthand how important this work is, and how fulfilled I felt for the first time in a long time. I spent my teens and 20s taking photos of the people and places around me, and my passion had only grown.

I love taking photos because it allows me to make connections, preserve moments that matter, and give people their favorite days for a lifetime. Now, I pour my heart and soul into my work, I build lifelong friendships with the couples I capture, and I can’t wait to give you your most meaningful moments to keep forever.

Family is big.

I have 32 first cousins, am a middle child, and at 5'10 am also the shortest. So when I say big, I really do mean it.

In 2022 my husband and I drove from Denver CO to the Arctic Ocean in Alaska. After rooftop tent camping that entire way, we invested in a tear drop trailer at the end. Needless to say the mosquitoes in Alaska are the size of birds.

At 30 I learned to ski.

Am not really very good at it, but atleast I can say I tried something new.

What an absolutely incredible experience we had with Rose. I searched far and wide trying to find a photographer for our wedding celebrations in Colorado, and we hit the jackpot finding Matlai Photography.
